Turn left, past bus stops, to reach Freshwater Bay Church.

St Agnes Church is the only thatched church on the island and is surprisingly modern (1908; the roof was rethatched in 1962). It was built for the benefit of Freshwater Bay residents and to ease overcrowding at All Saints at the other end of the parish. The Tennysons donated the site.

Towards the thatched church, Freshwater Bay

A short way past the church turn left (F47). Ignore a fork on the left after 400 metres to continue under the charming wooden – but sadly disused – Tennyson’s Bridge, the poet’s private link to the countryside. Patrons of the accommodation and restaurant now occupying Farringford are welcome to enter the grounds via the ‘secret’ green door. Tennyson himself used the door to visit his friend and neighbour Julia Cameron in Dimbola Lodge.

Farringford was Tennyson’s home from 1856 to 1867, and was host to several famous guests, such as Darwin, Garibaldi and Lewis Carroll. However, the grounds were regularly besieged by admirers, causing the despairing poet to move back to the mainland – although he did return periodically. There is self-catering accommodation and a café in the grounds, and the house is currently undergoing restoration for use as a study and cultural centre.
